Contours.co.uk – A great site for booking walking holidays. Contains maps of all popular routes in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales and includes synopses, distances and accommodation thrown in should you wish to travel in style.

WalkingWorld.com – A brilliant site for walkers in the UK, where you can find a walk anywhere and even submit your own routes. There 3650 walks to choose from, ranging from easy to difficult. You need to subscribe to print out more detailed maps, but the site will give you the location, distance and duration of the walk, plus a synopsis from somebody who’s hiked it previously. Lots of walking groups advertise on this site, making it a good network for walkers.

Hiking Web Site – Aptly-titled and with comprehensive guide on hiking. Includes advice on backpacking, gear to take, stores, checklists, best footwear to buy.

Backpacking.net – Includes a list of essential items to take.

ABC of Hiking – Everything you need to know about hiking, from the basics do’s and don’ts, history of the pursuit, news and shopping.

Countryside Access – This is the government’s official guide to the countryside. It includes the countryside code.

Ordnance Survey – ‘Great Britain’s national mapping agency’ offers the best in maps for walkers. There is an online map search tool.

Blacks – High-street stalwart for outdoor clothing, stocks its own brand plus many other popular brands.
